Watford Goalball Hosts Its First Home Tournament! 29 March 2025
For those unfamiliar, goalball is a Paralympic team sport designed for athletes with visual impairments, in which teams of three players throw a ball containing bells towards the opposing team’s goal. Watford Goalball Club hosted its first tournament at our training centre, marking an important milestone for our community. It was the first time we welcomed other goalball teams to compete on our home court, and the day brought together sport, teamwork and community spirit.
This event took place on 29 March 2025
A Historic Day at Our Training Centre
Our first home tournament took place at Watford Leisure Centre on Saturday 29 March 2025 and was a historic day for the club. After months of practice and preparation, we showcased goalball in our home town and played with the support of friends, family members and local supporters.
Hosting a tournament at our own centre demonstrated how much Watford Goalball Club had grown since it was established. Supporters and people who were new to the sport joined us to watch the matches and experience goalball in action.
Our Team of Three Players Ready to Compete
The club entered a team of three players to represent Watford on court. They had trained hard during our twice-monthly sessions, building their skills and teamwork before the tournament. The players worked together to defend their goal and score against the opposition, showing dedication and enthusiasm throughout the day.
Fundraising Sale: Supporting Our Future
Alongside the on-court action, Watford Goalball Club held a fundraising sale to support the team’s future expenses and development. Homemade bakes and refreshments were available, and every pound raised went towards helping the club and its players continue to thrive. The proceeds supported:
• Travel expenses for future tournaments – helping our team attend away matches and represent Watford across the region.
• Equipment and gear for the team – from goalballs and eyeshades to team jerseys, ensuring our players have what they need to train and compete.
• Training and development programmes – supporting venue hire for practice sessions, coaching developments, and the growth of our club to include more players of all ages.
• Overall club development – investing in the long-term success of Watford Goalball, so we can host more events and introduce this amazing sport to more members of the community.
Everyone attending was encouraged to visit the fundraising stall. Their support made a real difference to our athletes and the future of the club.
A Day of Community Fun and Sport
Our first home tournament was both a competition and a celebration of how far our community had come. Sports enthusiasts, supporters of inclusive sport and people discovering goalball for the first time were welcomed to watch the games free of charge. Volunteers were available to explain the rules and help everyone enjoy the day.
The tournament and fundraiser reflected the teamwork, perseverance and community support at the heart of our club. We thank all the volunteers, sponsors and friends who helped make the event possible.
