Chelmsford inter-club friendly Goalball tournament 2026
Watford Wizards Win the Tournament After Golden Goal Thriller
What a day for the Watford Wizards.
This friendly tournament was all about giving up-and-coming and newer intermediate players the opportunity to test themselves, gain valuable experience, and compete at intermediate level — and the Wizards rose to the challenge in outstanding style.
Game 1
From the very first game, Watford showed they had arrived with purpose. The team opened the day with a superb 8–0 win, keeping a clean sheet through excellent defence, effective communication and flexible team play. The Wizards adjusted well throughout the game, mixed things up when needed, and kept the score ticking over with calm, accurate shooting. It was a solid performance that every player could be proud of.
Game 2
Their next game was a much tighter contest, as Watford faced a powerful and fast Bradford side. Bradford brought real speed and strength, but Watford responded with great defensive discipline and accuracy. There was very little between the two teams throughout, with both sides battling hard for every goal.
In the second half, Watford began to apply more pressure, producing stronger shots while absorbing some excellent cross-court efforts from Bradford. It became a real game of wills, but the Wizards held their nerve and came away with a well-deserved 4–3 victory.
That result sent Watford into the final game for first place against Chelmsford — and what a final it was.
Game 3
Two teams put absolutely everything on the line. Both sides were equal in energy, commitment and defensive quality, and the game moved back and forth with an amazing display of technical skill, tactical awareness, and determination. Both teams found ways to score, both teams defended brilliantly, and at full time the score was locked at 4–4.
Then came the dreaded three-minute golden goal rule.
Watford lost the toss and had to receive first, but the team made everyone proud. They defended everything thrown at them, stayed composed under pressure, and adapted as Chelmsford adjusted to their tactics. With the clock running down and the tension building, it looked as though the game could go either way.
Then, with just 2.6 seconds left on the clock, Watford scored the winning goal.
A golden goal. A tournament-winning goal. A moment of pure Wizard magic.
Watford Wizards had done it.
This was one of the best tournaments of the year, showing everything, this team is capable of: resilience, communication, tactical awareness, brilliant defence, accurate shooting, and the ability to lift themselves when it mattered most.
There was even more to celebrate, with Jess and Orla finishing as the highest female scorers on the day, a fantastic achievement and a brilliant reflection of the talent, determination, and attacking quality within the squad.
There were also two very special milestones to celebrate on the day. A huge congratulations to Paul, who coached goalball for the first time and did a fantastic job supporting the team, offering guidance, and helping the players stay focused throughout the tournament. We are also delighted to celebrate Jess making her debut playing for Watford Wizards. Jess fitted into the team brilliantly, showed great confidence on court, and played a key part in a fantastic day for the club.
A huge thank you must also go to the coaches, support team and families. Days like this are not just won on court; they are built through encouragement, commitment, training, transport, support and belief.
Also, a thank you needs to go out to Chelmsford for creating and running this amazing tournament and putting all the effort into getting it set up.
This win was for everyone.
What an amazing team. What a fantastic tournament.
Go Wizards!
