Highlights from the Day
A challenging opener against Winchester Kings
Our opening match brought a demanding test against a strong Winchester Kings side. Winchester started quickly, using powerful, accurate shooting to take advantage of gaps in our defence.
The Wizards worked hard to respond, but defensive timing and attacking accuracy proved difficult to maintain against experienced opposition. Winchester secured a 12–2 victory, with the match ending under goalball’s 10-goal mercy rule.
It was a tough start, but a useful opportunity for players and coaches to identify the details that make a difference at this level.
Valuable lessons against Cambridge Fellows
Next came Cambridge Fellows, with the Wizards looking to build on what they had learned from the opening game.
There were passages where Watford showed they could compete, but the team struggled to bring defensive positioning, communication and accurate shooting together consistently. Cambridge took their opportunities and finished with a 9–2 win.
The match highlighted the importance of staying focused from the opening whistle, supporting one another and being able to reset for the next ball when things do not go to plan.
A thrilling finish against Fen Tigers
The final match produced the Wizards’ most encouraging performance of the day.
Facing a strong Fen Tigers team, Watford set out to play positively, enjoy the contest and put the earlier results behind them. What followed was an exciting exchange of goals, with both teams responding to each other throughout the match.
The Wizards played with greater freedom, energy and communication, showing the determination and teamwork we see in training. They remained firmly in the contest until the end, with Fen Tigers edging an 11–10 victory.
Although the result was another defeat, the performance gave the team plenty to take pride in. After two difficult games, Watford regrouped and pushed strong opposition all the way.

Oxford gave us a clear picture of where to focus our work in training: quicker and more consistent defensive timing, strong communication under pressure, greater shooting accuracy and the confidence to reset when a match becomes difficult.
It also showed what this team can achieve when those elements come together. The final match was a reminder of the potential within the squad and the value of continuing to learn and improve together.
